The mission of the museum is to promote original research, creative thinking, and lifelong learning among diverse and inclusive audiences.

Special Guest on TCM’s Follow the Thread (2022)

Turner Classic Movies presents a new original limited series, Follow the Thread, hosted by TCM’s Alicia Malone. Exploring the synergies between fashion and film, this series will trace their influence across the past, present and future of our culture. Presented on TCM (June 4) and HBO Max (June 17), Follow the Thread will cover a variety of topics at the intersection of film and fashion, inspired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s exhibition, In America: An Anthology of Fashion.

HA 347: History of Costume and Fashion in Film

This course surveys the history of costume design in films from 1895 to the present. Through screenings, museum visits, and readings, students view the work of leading costume and fashion designers and explore the connections between film and related visual art and media.

HA 346: Twentieth-Century Fashion and Art

This course covers the history of fashionable dress during the twentieth century, based upon the study of garments and accessories in museum collections as well as fashion photographs, illustrations, and films. The evolution of fashion is studied and discussed in the context of the history of art and design, with emphasis on the work of leading fashion designers and their connections and collaborations with fine and decorative artists.

HAD 368: History of Modern Fashion

This course undertakes a diachronic study of fashion from the late 19th century to present via the socio-cultural contexts that influenced the evolution of style and silhouette. Contemporary fashion theory is also introduced as a means to understand and explore the increasing complexity of the fashion system and the vital role of subcultures and the avant-garde.
